Episode 8: The Hybrid Cloud Forecast - Outlook: The Edge
DESCRIPTION
In this episode of Hybrid Cloud Forecast series, Andre and Rob High, IBM Fellow, Vice President and CTO, IBM Networking and Edge Computing, discuss hybrid cloud on the edge. Andre and Rob talk about the differences between cloud computing and edge computing - that cloud computing assumes a degree of homogeny and dynamism via scaling in the cloud and edge devices are very diverse and mostly in physically moving devices like cars and manufacturing equipment. Rob stresses the importance of autonomous systems that take responsibility to ensure the right software is in the right place at the right time across billions of diverse compute systems. They talk about how applications on the edge have to make do with fewer resources and deal with "compute islands" that may or may not be connected. Andre and Rob discuss the concept of "cloud-out" where the processing is offloaded to the edge for performance, cost and privacy reasons.
